21st- 29th April: SuSTAinable St Albans Week

There’s over 100 events taking place across St Albans 100+ events for you to enjoy – something for everyone, all ages, all interests. All about living more sustainably. Take the kids to Heron Watch, go to a vegan cookery class or head to a #plasticfree Community Picnic. Most are free, some events need booking.

What’s On

7th April – A Roman City revealed Walking Tour
Discover the past of Roman Britain’s third city. See the hypocaust and visit the unique Roman Theatre where Roman acting was very much part of the activities. Starts at 2.30pm from the front of the Old Town Hall in St Peter’s Street

7th April – Gouache Painting Workshop | Cositas
Make sure to check out the full line-up of workshops at Cositas this month you can create your own terrarium, a light up carnival letter or a leather bracelet.

8th April – Ultra White Collar Boxing | Club Batchwood
Enjoy an evening of fantastic boxing bouts and support the local boxers who have trained hard for 8 weeks to step in the ring and raise money for charity. Doors open at 3pm, standing tickets are £20.

8th April – Sunday Opening at the Organ Theatre
Organ Theatre will open to the public from 2.15 p.m. until 4.30 p.m. during which time there is a live, continuous musical performance of the various instruments, given with an informal, descriptive commentary. The afternoon includes a 10 minute interval for refreshments at 3.25 p.m. Doors open at 2 p.m.

8th April – Farmer’s Market | St. Peters Street
From 8am to 2pm, there will be local specialities, mouth-watering cheeses, seasonal fruit and vegetables, meat & game, cakes & bread and much more.

8th April – St. Albans South Signal Box
From 2-5pm, Come and enjoy a great day out at this historic signal box in St Albans. A free-entry attraction for kids, families and railway enthusiasts of all ages.

8th April –  Walking Tours
On Sunday there are three tours taking place – Historic St Albans (11am), Coaching Inns (2.30pm) and Roman Soldiers at Verulamium Museum (2.30pm & 3.30pm).  Tours start from the front of the Old Town Hall in St Peter’s Street

10th April – Patchwork | Cositas
Make sure to check out the full line-up of workshops at Cositas this month you can create your own terrarium, a light up carnival letter or a leather bracelet.

12th April – Choccie Drop for all the family | St Alban’s Cathedral
Sample some chocolate, and learn more about the connection between Easter and chocolate eggs. The perfect way to end the holidays! Suitable for ages 5 – 11, booking not required.

14th April – Walking Tour: Fishpool Street: Rags to Riches
Journey from St Michaels, taking in medieval pubs and the 16th century watermill they we know as The Waffle House. A fantastic opportunity to look at the architecture of some of the 72 listed buildings. Tour starts from Verulamium Museum.

15th April – Walking Tours
Two tours take place today – Historic St Albans (11am) and Victorian St Albans (2.30pm). Tours start from the front of the Old Town Hall in St Peter’s Street

16th April – The Concept of Creativity | Conscious Cafe MeetUp
Explore the concept of creativity. What is creativity? How do you develop creativity? And what gets in the way? Arrive from 6.45pm, £6 per person.

18th April – Uruguayan Wine Masterclass | Cellar Door Wines | London Road
Teresa Cedenilla from Bodega Garzon will talk you through five wines from this remote Estate. Light snacks will be provided. £10 per person.

19th April – Beer Night | Beer Shop | London Road
Whether you are a beer novice or geek, delve deep into the underbelly (beerbelly) of the nation’s favourite alcoholic beverage. The email may give you the opportunity to try a style you haven’t had before. £34 per person. (Only a few spaces left)

20th April – Biodynamic Wine Masterclass | Cellar Door Wines | London Road
An exciting opportunity to taste Waterkloof wines with Paul Boutinot. Paul will talk us through five of his Biodynamic wines. Light snacks served. £10 per person.

20th April – Wine and Chocolate Pairing | Thirty Nine 10
When wine and chocolate are paired together the flavour of both is enhanced. Combining the knowledge of sommelier, Ferenc, from Thirty Nine 10 with chocolatier, Kirsty, from The Choccie Drop, enjoy 5 wines paired with chocolate. £10 per person.

20th-24th April – Student Exhibition: The future in your hands | St Albans Cathedral
Oaklands College Art students are excited to exhibit in St Albans Cathedral. This annual exhibition gives everyone the opportunity to see the latest projects from the creative stars at Oaklands. FREE entry, times vary so check website for more details.

21st April – Mile House first free library opens
Opening Ceremony of the first ‘Little Free Library’ in St Albans located on our front garden wall: ‘Take a book, return a book’. Bring a book to donate!

28th April – Meet the Brewer and Beer Tasting | Cellar Door Wines | London Road
New River Brewery was born out of a desire to enable drinkers to experience locally brewed, fresh and flavoursome craft beers. Brewer John Bourdeaux will be here to talk you through three of his hand crafted beers. FREE but make sure to book.

28th April – Film and Feast evening | St Paul’s Church
Presented by National Geographic ‘Before the Flood’ stars Leonardo DiCaprioas a United Nations Messenger of Peace, traveling to five continents and the Arctic to witness climate change firsthand. Film starts at 7.30pm, tickets are £4.

28th April – Understanding carbon capture by new woodland | Heartwood Forest
As part of ‘St Albans Sustainability Week’ there will be a guided walk of about two miles around Heartwood Forest, learning about the carbon capture benefits of planting woodlands. £5 per person, make sure to book in advance.

28th April – Tower Tour  | St Albans Cathedral
Escorted by a cathedral guide you will be led up the great Norman Tower which is the only English 11th century central Cathedral tower still in its original form. £9.50 per person (Minimum age 11). Read the review from my recent visit.

29th April | There’s more to the Tudors than Henry VIII  Walk
From Henry VII to Elizabeth I, how did the dissolution of our powerful monastery impact on the people of St Albans and its economy? Tour starts at 2.30pm from the front of the Old Town Hall in St Peter’s Street

10th April | Herts Jazz Club – Simon Spillett Quartet | Maltings Theatre
Described by the late Humphrey Lyttelton as “formidable,” Simon Spillett is a major voice on the straight-ahead British jazz scene.

12th April | STAJE in Concert | Abbey Theatre
STAJE returns to the Abbey Theatre with another programme of Big Band Jazz, bursting at the seams with energy.

14th April | Ultimate Civic Disco with SLADE2! | Alban Arena
Re-live the era with the ultimate Glam Rock masters Slade. All proceeds for the evenings will go toward the new Museum & Gallery in St Albans. Standing tickets £23.25

21st April | Sleeping Beauty Ballet | Alban Arena
A classic fairytale set to Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score, stunning choreography, beautiful costumes all combine to portray the struggle between good and evil. Tickets £23.

24th April | Herts Jazz Club – Claire Martin and Liane Carroll | Maltings Theatre
Join these two multi-award winning jazz singers in an intimate night of song and musical mischief.

28th April | Kids Can Dance 2018 | Abbey Theatre Featuring performers from 4-14 years old, the show will consist of a mixture of street dance, hip-hop and contemporary dance pieces. Choreographed by Naomi Czuba and choreographic assistant Jade McGeoch.
